This week is infertility awareness week! Did you know that infertility affects 1 in 8 couples?!? That is a lot! Sadly, my husband and I are that 1 in 8. We have had our infertility diagnoses for almost a year now, and I hope to help all my readers learn this week just what infertility is and how you can support someone going through it! IMG_7103

Also, since it is National Infertility Awareness Week, all proceeds from my Etsy store will go toward helping my husband and I afford an IVF cycle hopefully later this year! Use IAW2014 for 10% off everything (including custom orders) in my store! The coupon is good now through the 27th.

So…What exactly is infertility?

Infertility is an often silent and invisible disease characterized by not being able to conceive and maintain a successful pregnancy after a year of trying for those under the age of 35 or after 6 months for those over the age of  35. Infertility can be caused by many factors such as PCOS, Endometriosis, Hormone Imbalance, Low Sperm Count, a variety of other things, or combinations of the above and other times it is simply ‘unexplained’. Men and women are affected equally and many couples struggle with both female and male factor infertility.

Primary Infertility is being unable to conceive or having multiple miscarriages while Secondary Infertility is being unable to conceive or maintain a pregnancy after having at least one child with no difficultly.

Despite its prominence, most insurance agencies consider family building and ART (artificial reproductive technology such as IUI or IVF) to be an optional or cosmetic procedure. This leaves many couples in a difficult spot as they try to save the $12,000-$20,000+ to pay for all the medications and procedures. It is so sad when it is cheaper to prevent or abort a baby than it is to conceive or adopt one…

So, what would you like to know about infertility? I’m hoping to answer questions and explain more about the IVF process and my thoughts on how a Christian can go through IVF (this is such a touchy subject for many and there isn’t much out there on what the Bible says about IVF), as well as share some of my favorite posts from various bloggers this week!
